PATRICIA GUZMÁN LLEVA LA DIGNIDAD RARÁMURI A LA CÚSPIDE DE LA ACUARELA MUNDIAL
Su obra "Alma Vieja" obtiene el máximo galardón en la 7ª edición de Women in Watercolor, posicionando la identidad indígena mexicana en la escena internacional.
Un retrato monumental de un niño Rarámuri durante la Semana Santa ha conquistado al jurado internacional de Women in Watercolor. La pintura, titulada Alma Vieja y realizada por la artista mexicana Patricia Guzmán, fue galardonada con el premio Best in Show entre más de 1,750 obras provenientes de 59 países.
El galardón marca un hito: Guzmán es la primera mexicana en recibir la máxima distinción de esta organización, pensada para visibilizar y promover el talento femenino en una técnica históricamente compleja y exigente.
Alma Vieja forma parte del proyecto «Raíces», una exploración visual concebida junto con el fotógrafo Raúl Barajas que busca desafiar la invisibilidad histórica y los prejuicios de raza y clase. "En cuanto tomé la foto, supe que lo tenía que pintar... De alguna manera él es yo, y yo soy él", reflexiona la artista sobre el proceso empático que define su trabajo.
Ante el galardón, la artista destacó la importancia de abrir y defender espacios para la creación femenina:
"Agradezco a Lynn D. Pratt por crear este espacio y visibilizarnos en un mundo que aún puede ser machista. Esto me hace reflexionar sobre la necesidad de cuidarnos entre nosotras, defender nuestros derechos y hacernos de 'una habitación propia' donde podamos dar rienda suelta a nuestras creaciones", expresó la pintora.
Originaria de la Ciudad de México y radicada en Querétaro, Patricia Guzmán cuenta con una destacada trayectoria de más de 30 premios y 160 exposiciones en el mundo. A través de retratos de gran formato y un enfoque profundamente humanista, su obra explora la identidad indígena y la equidad social, invita a conectar emocionalmente con los pueblos originarios desde la dignidad, el respeto y la memoria compartida. A monumental portrait of a Rarámuri child during Holy Week has captivated the international jury of Women in Watercolor. The painting, titled Alma Vieja and created by Mexican artist Patricia Guzmán, was awarded Best in Show among more than 1,750 works from 59 countries.
The award marks a milestone: Guzmán is the first Mexican to receive the highest distinction from this organization, which was created to highlight and promote female talent in a historically complex and demanding technique.
Alma Vieja is part of the "Raíces" (Roots) project, a visual exploration conceived in collaboration with photographer Raúl Barajas that seeks to challenge historical invisibility and prejudices of race and class. “As soon as I took the photo, I knew I had to paint it… In a way, he is me, and I am him,” the artist reflects on the empathetic process that defines her work.
Upon receiving the award, the artist emphasized the importance of opening and defending spaces for women's creative work:
“I thank Lynn D. Pratt for creating this space and making us visible in a world that can still be sexist. This makes me reflect on the need to support each other, defend our rights, and create ‘a room of our own’ where we can give free rein to our creativity,” the painter expressed.
