I began this painting as a tribute and celebration of the pets with whom we share our lives. This is a very personal painting with which I wanted to honor and celebrate unconditional love and its teachings. The wolf is the protector, the teacher, the wise one; the one who guides in times of uncertainty, who protects in times of pain. On her side she has tattooed the Mayan symbol In lak ech, hala ken, meaning “I am you, and you are me”. The Milky Way is a nod to the immeasurable nature of existence and the ineffable nature of consciousness.
The experience began with a series of photographs I took of someone I greatly admire, Carmen Coronado, who is a filmmaker, photographer, actress, and boxer. The idea behind that photo series was to showcase the strength and resilience of women as the starting point for a new painting series. On the other hand, I knew I wanted to add the image of a wolf to the narrative of her specific reference photo, and several years ago I had the opportunity to visit a wolf sanctuary in Canada where I took many photos that served as inspiration for the wolf image.
I began with a very simple graphite sketch, 5”x7”, to visualize the space the wolf and the woman would occupy. Then I painted a monochromatic oil sketch to visualize the values and the overall composition. I followed the whispers the painting gave me over the months, intermittently resolving and listening to them. I kept working on it on and off until I felt a click inside indicating I had reached the image in my mind's eye and heart.

Melancolía obtuvo el segundo lugar en la categoría de Temas Favoritos de la Revista Internacional 2026.
Comencé esta pintura como un homenaje y una celebración de las mascotas con las que compartimos nuestras vidas. Es una obra muy personal con la que quise honrar y celebrar el amor incondicional y sus enseñanzas. El lobo es el protector, el maestro, el sabio; el que guía en tiempos de incertidumbre, el que protege en tiempos de dolor. Ella tienen en su costado un tatuaje con el símbolo maya In lak ech, hala ken, que significa "Yo soy tú, y tú eres yo". La Vía Láctea alude a la naturaleza inconmensurable de la existencia y a la naturaleza inefable de la conciencia.
La experiencia comenzó con una serie de fotografías que tomé de alguien a quien admiro profundamente, Carmen Coronado, cineasta, fotógrafa, actriz y boxeadora. La idea detrás de esa serie fotográfica era mostrar la fuerza y la resiliencia de las mujeres como punto de partida para una nueva serie de pinturas. Por otro lado, sabía que quería añadir la imagen de un lobo a la narrativa y hace varios años tuve la oportunidad de visitar un santuario de lobos en Canadá, donde tomé muchas fotos que me sirvieron de inspiración para la imagen del lobo.
Comencé con un boceto muy sencillo a grafito, de 5 x 7 pulgadas, para visualizar el espacio que ocuparían el lobo y la mujer. Luego pinté un boceto al óleo monocromático para visualizar los valores y la composición general. Seguí las intuiciones que me transmitía la pintura durante los meses siguientes, resolviéndolas y escuchándolas intermitentemente. Continué trabajando en ella de forma intermitente hasta que sentí una especie de clic interior que me indicó que había alcanzado la imagen que tenía en mente y en mi corazón.
